macnwn2x - Install PC Mask of the Betrayer on Mac NWN2

(7/13/09) Newer USA DVDs may also require step 3. If you don't have button text or your cutscenes are moving lightning-fast, you probably need to complete step 3.

Known Issues (v0.6.1):

  1. Several people have reported issues with character models disappearing, being unable to open doors, etc, upon entering the Death God's Vault for the first time. These seem to generally be correcting by changing resolutions from the in-game menu.
  2. If your cutscenes are moving at lightning speed, you are missing your VO_X1.zip file!
  3. Character portrait customization (which works under vanilla NWN2) does not seem to work after MotB is installed. (thanks to Mark L.)

Issues With Previous Versions:

  1. Early versions of macnwn2x had issues with resting when running NWN2/MotB upgraded to v1.12. Version 0.5 fixes this issue.
  2. Some people with international versions (ie non-USA) of the MotB DVD have a different dialog.tlk location, meaning macnwn2x can't find it. You should be able to use the original dialog.tlk file without many problems, but please report any issues you come across. Version 0.6 should fix this issue.

Overview of macnwn2x

  • As of v0.5, macnwn2x has two steps. First you extract all the files from the DVD to a folder on your hard drive, and in the second step you actually apply these files to your NWN2 install. The first step is both the longest and the least likely to fail, so I've separated it out so you don't have to keep repeating it. You can also pull files out to manually complete a partial update.
  • New for v0.6, a third step to complete installs from non-USA DVDs (7/13/09 New USA DVDs may also require this third step)
  • Has been reported to work with digital downloads of MotB via virtual machines. You should be able to extract the purchase in the virtual machine, and then simply copy over the directory and point macnwn2x at it (copying may or may not be necessary). Thanks to John and for this tip and Ari-Jon for instructions:
    1. Download and extract the installer in Windows. This will create a .exe and 2 .rar files
    2. Copy these 3 files over to the Mac
    3. Extract them all with UnRarX
    4. During Step 1 of macnwn2x, point the app at the directory where the files were just extracted to
    5. Complete the rest of the install

Recommended Procedure as of 8/8/08:

  1. To be safe, operate on a copy of your NWN2 install. Just duplicate the entire folder in the finder, or install a second copy from the DVD. As long as they have different folder names, you can have multiple copies side-by-side in the Applications/ folder.
  2. Install NWN2 for the Mac
  3. Upgrade to v1.12 (patch available from Aspyr)
  4. Install MotB using macnwn2x
  5. Update your nwn.ini file (~/Documents/Aspyr/Neverwinter Nights 2/nwn.ini) by adding the following two lines: (thanks linuxpng)
    • ambientX1=.\ambient_X1
    • musicX1=.\music_X1
  6. Consider adding your MotB CD Key to ~/Documents/Aspyr/Neverwinter Nights 2/nwncdkey.ini. It isn't added there by default. (thanks Tristan)

1 -> 3 -> 2 may work as well, but has not been reported on as extensively.

Warnings:

  • Please verify your MotB install (see below). This program doesn't do much error checking, and it's entirely possible for things to go wrong without receiving an error message.
  • You may want to operate on a copy of your NWN2 install (just copy the entire directory).
